About Us
In December of 2000 I decided to pursue my interest in parrots.
I had wanted a parrot for a long time and had devoured the articles
in "Bird Talk" magazine. I have always loved having dogs,
cats, and fish, but I really wanted to develop a relationship with
a bird.
So, I went to my nearest pet shop which was 20 miles away to see
what they had to offer. As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted
by a Blue Front Amazon named Lola who said "Hello Lola".
I was amazed. I had never heard a parrot talk before.
As it turned out, Lola wasn't for sale. The only other bird there
was a Nanday Conure named Koi. He was 8 months old and not very
friendly. I bought him any way. Yes, it was certainly an impulse
buy.
I brought him home and the first thing he did was run up my arm
and bite me behind the neck. Great. Here I was with a bird that
bites that I couldn't take back. Not one to give up easily, I bought
every book I could find on Conures and other birds. I studied and
our work began.
Soon I had Koi trusting me and we were bonding. I began telling
people at work how wonderful Koi was and the word got around that
I loved birds. People started asking me if I would take their birds
that they couldn't keep any more.
My husband and I soon realized that since parrots had become the
3rd most popular pet there was a need for more bird sanctuaries
in order to provide unwanted birds a safe, loving environment where
they could be happy for the rest of their lives.
Soon after, Safe Haven Parrot Sanctuary was born. We filed our
501(c)(3) nonprofit papers and we've been growing ever since.
We now provide a home for over 100 rescued birds. They are all
greatly loved. Koi is still wonderful. We have become great pals
even though he adores a sun conure named Blaze.
In 2006 we built a 2,400 sq. ft. climate controlled building for
our birds and are continuing to expand. An 11'x17' Florida room
was donated recently that will be added on to our sanctuary building
in spring. Next year another attached building will be remodeled
for the birds. This summer we will be adding outdoor aviaries. All
of this expansion is funded by us and donations from bird lovers
around the country. See Donations.
Our sanctuary has been set up so that it will continue on even
after our passing from this earth.
I have received my AFA Aviculturist Certification and continue
to expand my knowledge about birds so I can help people and their
birds stay together. But, if it turns out a bird needs a new home,
no bird is ever turned away from Safe Haven.
